Trader Sam’s – November 13, 2017

We had went to Trader Sams on our last trip to Disneyland on our first night there, it was Luke’s request for his birthday after enjoying our first experience at the Trader Sam’s in Florida a few weeks earlier. We knew we wanted to go at some point during this trip, so once we were both starting to feel hungry  and a little cranky, we decided it was time for a drink.

Trader Sam’s is a small, heavily themed bar located by the Disneyland Hotel.

It is based off the Jungle Cruise ride, and has no shortage of things to look at on the walls.

I wasn’t feeling great by the time we got there, so I decided alcohol was not a good idea, so I tried one of the non-alcoholic drinks on the menu, the Schweitzer Falls – the AMAZING… the COLOSSAL… the STUPENDOUS…the eighth wonder of the world… Dr. Albert Falls’ favourite (over the rocks). Tropical juices and Sam’s Gorilla Grog topped with Sprite – $5.25

I enjoyed this (and not just because it had a glow cube – although that didn’t hurt haha). It was sweet, which I’m a fan of.

Luke wanted alcohol, and he wanted to try something he hadn’t tried before, so his choice was the Krakatoa Punch – there’s no escaping falling in lava with this exotic eruption of flavor! Reserve and Spiced rums, orgeat (almond) syrup, Sam’s Gorilla Grog and hibiscus grenadine. Served in a souvenir Tiki mug. $23.50 with a souvenir mug

I did try his drink – it was good, but very strong (like all drinks at Trader Sam’s). They also were not serving the drinks in souvenir mugs, but hey did have these ones in stock for us to bring home.

We also decided to split some food, and once again ordered the Pu-Pu Platter – sweet and spicy Asian wings, fried spring rolls, panko-crusted Chinese long beans, lettuce mix and sriracha aioli, $17

I always think I like spring rolls, but after my first bite I remember I’m not a huge fan haha. No worries though, Luke really liked these so he ate them both. The Asian wings were a little too spicy for my liking, so again, Luke had those. The beans though – yum!  I loved these in January when we had them, and, despite me not feeling the greatest at this point, I was able to assist in putting a decent dent in that pile of beans. The Sriracha aioli was really good with the beans, I didn’t find it too spicy at all.

Luke had enjoyed it so much last time that he also decided to order the Angus 1/3 LB Hawaiian Cheeseburger – ground angus burger with teriyaki sauce, fresh caramelized pineapple, havarti cheese, bacon, lettuce and tomato on a brioche bun. Includes your choice of one of the following sides: sweet potato fries, classic french fries or island fruit – $13

I wasn’t interested in the burger, but Luke liked it a lot. I was excited when I saw shoestring fries, and I might have claimed quite a few of those for myself…

Basically, my entire meal here consisted of french fries and beans haha, but it was delicious and I wouldn’t change it – vacation mode!

We happened to overhear a server talking about the limited edition Haunted Mansion mugs that had been released a few weeks earlier – we had just assumed they were sold out, but turns out they weren’t! We excitedly asked for one of those to take home, and didn’t even care about the cost haha (it was $25 for the mug alone). It’s so amazing though!

Our total bill was $84.54 after saving 15% using my Annual Pass.

Cheesecake Factory – January 30th, 2017

This was our third trip to Anaheim, and our second time at the Cheesecake Factory – I’m a fan. The food itself is fairly generic – but the menu is huge, there are so many options! My favourite part is the cheesecake display – look how beautiful it is haha.

I’ll apologize now – this restaurant is really dark, which makes it really difficult to get good pictures, especially with my phone (and I don’t want to be that person using my flash).

They started us off with some bread – pumpernickel I believe? I liked it, but I tend to like most things with carbs.

I decided to go for the Chicken Riesling – chicken breast,  mushrooms, bacon, onions, and garlic in a white wine riesling cream sauce. Served with buttered parmesan pasta – $13.95

This was pretty decent! I’m a simpleton who loves nothing but butter on my noodles, so this was perfect for me. I also quite enjoyed the white wine sauce on the chicken – but again, I’m not a food connoisseur, so I’m not always the best one to take food advice from haha.

Luke wanted a cocktail, and ordered the Cucumber Mojito – Hendrick’s and St. Germain with cucumber, basil and fresh mint, $12.25

Luke said this was good, but a drink that costs almost as much as my entire meal?! Seems a little ridiculous.

Luke didn’t feel like a big meal, and ordered an appetizer sized Caesar Salad – the almost traditional recipe with croutons, parmesan cheese, and our special caesar dressing, with chicken added, $13.95.

This was a salad – nothing special, but it was exactly what Luke wanted and it hit the spot.

Of course we had to have cheesecake! Luke ordered the Key Lime Cheesecake – Key Lime Pie in a Cheesecake! Deliciously tart and creamy on a vanilla crumb crust – $7.95. I forgot to take a picture of this – it was our last night and I was tired!

I wasn’t hungry, so I ordered my cheesecake to go and ate it the next day at the airport. I went for the Adam’s Peanut Butter Fudge – creamy cheesecake swirled with caramel, peanut butter, Butterfingers and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups – $7.95

This is such an odd choice for me, considering I’m not a huge fan of peanut butter, but I love this cheesecake so much. I didn’t take the picture until the next day, so the whipped cream had seen better days haha. It was still delicious, and I would absolutely order this again.

Our total bill came to $60.39.

Canucks Bar & Grill – June 9, 2018

We had a lengthy layover at the Vancouver airport, so once we were through customs Luke and I immediately headed to Starbucks for some drinks – a Berry Hibiscus Refresher for me and a coffee for Luke. They asked for a name, and since my name gets butchered at places like that, we gave Luke’s… and naturally they wrote Lou on my drink. Seriously Starbucks?! I feel like they do that on purpose sometimes.

While we were in line for our drinks, Mom and Rhonda had wandered over towards our gate and found the Canucks Bar & Grill. Mom texted me to let me know that they had grabbed a table for four, so we headed over once we had drinks in hand. I personally hate the Canucks (it happens when you’re an Oilers fan), but when in Vancouver, amiright?

It was only about 8:30am at this point, so obviously they were only serving breakfast. The breakfast menu was fairly small, but it is just an airport restaurant.

Luke ordered his most common breakfast item- Eggs Benedict – poached farm fresh eggs, English muffin, Canadian back bacon, hollandaise sauce, $15

All he really said about this is that it was “good, especially for airport food”. He ate it all, so clearly he had no complaints.

I don’t typically eat eggs, but I ordered the Traditional Two Egg Breakfast – two eggs any style, choice of bacon, sausage or Canadian back bacon, breakfast potatoes, toast, $14.50.

This was decent. There was strawberry jam for my toast, the back bacon was tasty and the breakfast potatoes were cooked well. Breakfast is still my least favourite meal of the day, but this hit the spot since I was pretty hungry. I even ate a few bites of the scrambled eggs, and they were pretty good – I’m no expert but they seemed like good eggs – cage free or organic or something.

I didn’t take pictures, but Rhonda ordered the same thing I did, only with over-easy eggs and regular bacon. Mom had the Gameday Breakfast Scramble – egg, bacon, cartelized onion, BC mushrooms, cheddar, breakfast potatoes, $14.50.

The total for Luke and I came to $30.98 – a little pricey, but airport prices were just trying to prepare us for Disney pricing haha.

Famoso – December 27, 2017

Since we were leaving for our two week wedding trip on December 30th, we were running a little low on groceries in our house by the 27th. We found a coupon for $10 off an order at Famoso, and it was a Wednesday night so one of my favourite things on the menu was on special, so we decided to head to the South Edmonton Common for supper.

We both ordered a drink – because vacation mode had already set in! Diablo Iced Tea – spiced rum, orange liqueur, lemon Italian soda, cola, apple juice, 1oz $6.95, Italian Greyhound – vodka, vermouth rosso, grapefruit Italian soda, lime ,fresh basil, 1oz $6.95

One of my favourite items on the menu at Famoso are the Prosciutto Wrapped Mozza Balls – Fior-di-latte wrapped with prosciutto, baked in Campania tomato sauce, fresh basil, Grana Padano. Served with garlic flatbread. The typical cost is $19.95 for 6 of these, but on Wednesday nights they are $2/each (so $12 for 6 of them).

You can’t really see them in this bowl, but I promise there are 6 mozza balls in here. These are so good – fresh fior-di-latte cheese wrapped in proscuitto with lots of tomato sauce. I don’t think I could eat many more than 3 of these, it’s a lot of cheese, but they are so good!

We decided to share a pizza, and switched it up from our typical orders and went for the Quattro Fromaggi – Fior-di-latte, smoked mozzarella, gorgonzola, Grana Padano, fresh basil, lemon wedge, $16.95

This was ok, but I’ve realized I’m not a huge fan of white pizzas – I’m a bit of a purist and prefer traditional red sauce. Squeezing the lemon over top of this was nice though. Luke liked this a lot more than I did.

Plaza Inn – November 11, 2017

One of our repeat meals from our previous trip to Disneyland was at the Plaza Inn for breakfast. We again had a reservation for first thing in the morning on the Saturday we were there, and were able to enter a fairly empty park. We checked in to the restaurant, paid up front for our meal (a requirement here – also, hurray for AP discounts!), were handed our Plaza Inn pins and were led to our table. Along the way, we ran into my favourite, Eeyore, so naturally we had to stop for hugs.

We also found some chipmunks before I even had a chance to take off my sunglasses, so we took some selfies 🙂

Chip, Dale and Eeyore loved Luke’s shirt, and made a big deal out of it haha.

Of all the character meals we’ve done at Disneyland and Walt Disney World (and it’s actually quite a few), none of them compare to this one for number of characters. Most character meals have four, sometimes five characters – this one typically has nine or ten. We had already seen three before even sitting down.

The food here is pretty basic breakfast fare. It’s a buffet, but the cast members tend to serve you, you just let them know what you’d like.

I had a made to order omelet with bacon, ham and cheese to start. I tend to stay away from eggs, they don’t always agree with me, but I just can’t help myself when I see an omelet station! I also had a glass of apple juice.

The omelet was obviously fresh, as I watched it being made. It was more eggs than I wanted to eat, so I didn’t finish it all, but I did enjoy it. There was a lot of bacon and ham, and a generous serving of cheese on top.

I grabbed a second plate with some bacon, ham and a piece of chicken-fried steak with country gravy.

This stuff was all ok. Nothing was spectacular, but I don’t eat come to Plaza Inn at breakfast for the food.

Luke’s first plate contained hash browns, sausage, scrambled eggs and bacon, along with a yogurt/granola/berry parfait and a small plate with a chocolate pastry and some fruit.

Again, this was all ok. Disney bacon is always good. The hashbrowns weren’t great, but everything else was fine.

Our first visitor to our table was T-I-double-Gah-er, who was his usual bouncy self!

Next up was a villain, Mr. Captain Hook.

Max was next (Luke’s faces are hilarious in these pictures)

One of my favourites, Winnie the Pooh stopped by to see us next.

Eeyore then stopped by, and even though we had already taken pictures with him when we first entered the restaurant, we had to get some more 🙂

The 8th character we saw was the Fairy Godmother

We noticed we had time before the next character stopped by, so we headed over to grab more food. I grabbed a slice of french toast and a Mickey waffle, and a small plate of fruit (strawberries, watermelon, orange slices, grapes and honeydew melon), along with a little jello cup. Luke grabbed a second plate as well, but I have no idea what he had since I forgot to take a picture.

I like the french toast here, I had it last time we ate at Plaza as well. It’s nothing special, but the warm syrup is a nice touch. Mickey waffles are a classic staple when eating breakfast at Disney, and they all taste the same. I’ve realized over time that I might be allergic to honeydew, it always makes my mouth feel funny so I only had a small bite of that. I enjoyed the rest of it though.

I decided to run to the bathroom, thinking I had enough time before Piglet made his way over to our table. However, the bathroom is outside of the restaurant, so I just missed him by the time I got back. I saw Piglet about to head outside to visit with the people out there, so I ran over and managed to get a few selfies with him.

Minnie Mouse is technically the host of this meal, but she was not making her way around the restaurant and instead was standing outside by the main entrance. They were having guests get their picture with her before entering the restaurant, and then coming around trying to sell those pictures. Don’t even get me started on how much this bothers me – I paid $1500 for my Premier Annual Pass, over $30/person to eat breakfast, and now you want me to pay another $30 for a picture with Minnie Mouse. No, just no. This is taking the greed to a whole other level. I did insist on stopping to get a picture with Minnie before we left, and I asked the photographer how to get our picture. He kept telling me I would need to pay for it but I kept resisting, but eventually he let me know that I could go to the Photopass store on Main Street and they would be able to load my pictures on to my account for free since I had photopass included with my annual pass. So – anytime a Disney restaurant wants you to purchase photos, mention this and see if the cast member will confirm that this is an option.

The total cost of this meal was $62.28 after tax. This included a 15% discount thanks to my annual pass.

The Village Diner – October 1, 2017

On the last day of our Winnipeg trip, we headed to the Village Diner with Luke’s sister and brother in law. This place used to be located in the Osbourne Village Inn, but relocated to it’s current location on Sargent. (**I just googled this place, and apparently it has now closed permanently, which is really too bad!). The location was a bit sketchy, I’m pretty sure I saw a pimp ride by on his bicycle while we ate, but the quality of the food (and the price) more than made up for that.

Luke and I decided to each order something, and share a Turkey Poutine – white and dark turkey meat, mozzarella, turkey gravy, cranberry dijonnaise, $9.50. I’m not a huge cranberry fan, so I asked for that on the side. This was a very large portion, and a really fantastic poutine! The fries were great, the gravy had lots of flavour and they were not cheap with the turkey or the cheese.

I decided to go for the Club Mansion – hot white and dark turkey, cheddar cheese, leaf lettuce, tomato, braised pork belly and cranberry dijonnaise on multigrain $9. I again asked for the cranberry on the side, and asked for no tomato. This was a huge sandwich, I wasn’t expecting three pieces of bread (which is silly – it’s called a club, which traditionally always has three pieces). It was good, but I would have just been happy eating that poutine.

Luke ordered the Elvis – grilled peanut butter, bacon and banana sandwich with hashbrowns and fruit $8.50. Luke loved this – I’m not a big peanut butter fan so I didn’t try it, but I did steal some of those awesome hash browns haha.

I really hope Google is incorrect and that this place is still open, or that it finds a new place to open – the food was great and the price is so reasonable for the amount of food you receive!

Nomad Lounge – January 2nd, 2018

It was really cold, and really packed on this day, so we decided to take a break at Nomad Lounge. Of course, there were no tables inside, but we found a 2-top table outside against the railing. Luckily, the railing is quite high, so it provided some relief from the cold wind and it wasn’t too terrible sitting outside.

The drink menus are really nice here, designed to look like a travel journal. It has a really interesting drink menu, with lots of options you can’t find anywhere else. I actually took pictures of each page, so enjoy a million pictures of it:

Luke wanted alcohol, so he ordered the Snow Leopard Salvation: snow leopard vodka, belle de brillet pear liqueur, mint and lime juice topped with ginger beer $12.50

We both liked this, even though it was strong. Luke likes ginger beer more than I do, but I’d probably say vodka is my alcohol of choice.

I wanted something non-alcoholic, so I went for the Hibiscus Henna – watermelon, hibiscus and lime juice $5.75

This was really good! Not too sweet, filled with flavour and was a really fun, bright pink colour. Even Luke, who hates watermelon, gave this drink a thumbs-up.

We wanted to share something from their Small Plate Menu, so we ordered the House-Smoked Kobe-Style Brisket Poutine – steak fries, house-made mozzarella, pan sauce $12

This is a small serving (hence the name, ‘small-plates’), but was very good! I’m not typically one who likes steak fries, I prefer my fries shoestring style, but these were cooked well and were not soggy like some larger-cut fries tend to be. The smoked brisket was really tasty, as was the mozzarella. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the “pan sauce”, but it complimented everything very well! We did dump it over everything, they just bring it out separately so nothing gets soggy (and I forgot to take a picture once we had dumped the sauce on). Being Canadian, I like to think I know what a good poutine is – this is definitely not a traditional poutine, but it is something I wouldn’t hesitate to order again!

While we were sitting there nursing the rest of our drinks, I saw a server walk by with the churros from the dessert menu, and I decided that I needed them in my life – so we ordered Churros – served with vanilla crema and chili-strawberry $9

This came in the cutest little serving dish! It was basically the equivalent of two and a half churros purchased from elsewhere in the parks (which are typically $5/each) – so this was actually a good deal! They were warm, which is a must for a good churro in my books, and covered in a very generous layer of cinnamon. The sauces were very good as well – which surprised me since I normally think churros are delicious enough on their own. The chili-strawberry was the consistency of a runny strawberry jam, but then it did have a spicy chili kick at the end. The vanilla crema was a runny vanilla sauce, and definitely my favourite of the two options.

Total cost for our bill was $40.52 after using my Tables in Wonderland card, or $33.45 excluding the auto-gratuity.

Tables in Wonderland original cost: $150                                                 Break Even Point Before this meal: $118.03                                         Savings this Meal: $7.85                                                                                         Total Until Breaking Even: $110.18

Predicted food budget: $2631.67 (does not include tip)       Estimated Cost of this meal: $115.55 (original plan was Tiffins) Actual Cost: $7.57 (Flame Tree) + $33.45 (Nomad Lounge) = $41.02 Over/Under: Under by $74.53                                                           Remaining: $2102.43

Festival of Holidays – November 13th, 2017

We had one tab left on the Sip and Savor pass, and Luke had been eyeing up a certain item, so I encouraged him to visit ‘Grandma’s Recipes’ and get the Sweet Potato Pie, $4.50.

I didn’t try this, so I will allow Luke to describe it:

It tasted like a butter tart, it was fluffy and sweet. The tart shell was as it should be – crispy. I’d never had a sweet potato pie before since it’s not really a Canadian thing – but butter tarts are!

Festival of Holidays – November 11, 2017

We still had tabs left from my Sip and Savor pass, so we decided to enjoy samples from the Festival of the Holidays food booths as our supper.

Luke stopped at the ‘Winter Sliderland’ booth and grabbed a Roasted Turkey Slider – with cranberry sauce, $7.50

This did not look like it was worth $7.50 – I was happy to have the Sip and Savor Pass! Luke liked it though, and was pleased with the amount of turkey on it, but it tasted more like deli-style turkey. I’m not a fan of cranberry sauce, so I didn’t try it. Luke described it as good but not great.

My first stop was at the ‘Chips, Breads and Holiday Spreads’ booth to get the Chorizo Queso Fundido – with house made tortilla chips, $6.

This was really good! I don’t always love chorizo, but it was awesome  paired with the queso in this, since it took the edge off and made the chorizo taste less spicy. This was probably my favourite item from the food booths, and it was a generous portion.

The top is the Turkey Slider (see review above). The centre was another one of Luke’s picks, the Nashville Hot Fried Turkey – served with dill pickles $7, from the ‘Spicy Celebrations’ booth. I didn’t try this either, but apparently it was really spicy. Luke loves spicy food, so he was excited to actually get something with kick (so many foods will be advertised as spicy, but it turns out to be fairly tame and mild).

The bottom was something I was really excited for – the Beef Short Rib – with smashed potatoes and gravy, $7.75, from the ‘Joy to the Sauce’ food booth. Yum! This would be that queso’s biggest competition in my favourite food booth item from the Festival of Holidays. It was tender and flavourful, and the potatoes and gravy were a great accompaniment. I love beef and potatoes though, so it doesn’t take much to make me excited haha.

The ‘Making Spirits Bright’ booth had caught my attention, and I decided to treat myself to a Mimosa Flight, $16. This thing was pretty expensive, but oh so delicious! There were three different mimosas included in the flight – White Cranberry: Chandon Brut sparkling wine and white cranberry juice, Pear: Chandon Brut sparkling wine, pear purée and Blood Orange: Chandon Brut sparkling wine, blood orange purée. The orange was by far my favourite, but I thoroughly enjoyed the other two as well. The cranberry one just tasted like Ocean Spray White Cranberry juice, and that’s probably what it was (with a bit of cheap wine added, of course), but it was still good. I’m not usually a pear fan, but I had no trouble drinking this mimosa haha.

We had another great experience with the food booths, and we were both full without feeling too stuffed.

Cafe Orleans – Fantasmic Package – November 10, 2017

We had ate at Cafe Orleans twice on our previous trip in January 2017, we really enjoyed it and it was on our must-do again list for this trip. We were planning on just making a normal reservation, but then we heard that they were offering Fantasmic dining packages for a limited time while River Belle Terrace underwent some renovations. We had never watched Fantasmic at Disneyland, we didn’t have time on our first two trips, and it was closed during our third trip, so it was something that was high on our priority list.

We made a reservation for 3pm, which is a bit of an odd time, but we knew we’d be up crazy early for the Avengers 5k that morning and would want to have a shower and a quick nap before heading to the parks, so this way we knew we wouldn’t be too rushed.

Of course, we were still rushed haha, and had to walk very quickly from Tomorrowland in order to get there on time. Cafe Orleans is always busy though, and we did have a bit of a wait – although I believe those with the dining package had less of a wait than those with regular dining reservations. The park was so crowded that day they weren’t even accepting walk-ups.

By the time we were led to our table, we were both hangry – you know, hungry and angry. Our anger was just grumpiness from being awake so early that day and from being hungry. I felt bad, because we were a little short with our server at the beginning of this meal (don’t worry, we talked to her and apologized once we had some food in our stomach haha).

It was difficult to find the options for the three course dining package online due to this being offered temporarily, but we had found one that listed the amazing Pommes Frites as a choice for the appetizer course. When we were handed our menus at the table though, this was not on there, and we weren’t thrilled since we had already decided that’s what we would both be choosing as our first course. Our server told us that had never been an option, ever, but we kept asking why we had seen it online (again, tired, hungry and grumpy – not my finest moment). This entire thing was stupid, since it’s not like those fries are expensive, and we just asked for an order of them anyways and paid for it in addition to our three course meal.

Anyways, this is what the menu looked like that we were given:

For the appetizer portion of the meal, Luke ordered the La Salade de Maison – baby greens, cherry tomatoes, candied pecans and goat cheese with a raspberry vinaigrette.

It’s not a salad I would care for, but Luke really enjoyed it. The greens were clearly really fresh, the candied pecans brought a nice sweet taste and the feta was creamy and delicious.

I went for their seasonal soup, which was a Chicken Gumbo. I actually didn’t know what gumbo was, and asked our waitress if it had seafood in it. She looked at me like I was a complete moron and repeated very slowly “I just said it was chicken gumbo.” I don’t eat seafood of any kind, so I was worried it would have shrimp or something gross in it, but she assured me that the only meat was chicken.

This was not what I was expecting, but it was really good! I still couldn’t tell you exactly what gumbo is, but I know I liked this one, and would order it again.

Our third appetizer, as mentioned above that we paid for in addition to the dining package were the Pommes Frites – traditional French fried potatoes tossed with garlic, Parmesan and parsley, served with a Cajun Spice Remoulade, $7. We’ve had these from here before and love them, they are on my can’t miss at Disneyland list. The remoulade I could take or leave, I’m not a huge fan, but I love shoestring style fries and the garlic-Parmesan these are coated in is so tasty!

For my entree, I chose the Steak and Potatoes– chef’s choice house-rubbed steak, garlic mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables served with a beer-molasses sauce

This was so good! I didn’t eat the Brussel Sprouts, because those things are nasty (but Luke ate them and thought they were great), but I enjoyed the carrots and broccoli. I was worried about the sauce (I’m not a fan of beer or molasses), but this was great! I had requested a well-done steak, so I’m not sure if it’s always chopped up into smaller pieces or if that was the Chef’s way of ensuring it was fully cooked, but I didn’t care. This was cooked the way I like my steak – not bleeding on my plate, but not tough and dry and chewy. I’m not an expert on steak (despite living in Alberta), but I do know this wasn’t a super fancy, expensive cut – but again, I didn’t care and I really enjoyed it. Potatoes are one of my favourite foods, and these didn’t disappoint- nice and garlicky and creamy.

For his entree, Luke decided on the Bourbon Street Chicken – honey-kissed Chicken with Hoppin’ John, seasonal vegetables and bourbon sauce

Neither one of us knew exactly what he was going to get – what does honey-kissed mean? What the heck is Hoppin’ John? What will Bourbon sauce taste like?

Luke thought this was delicious – I had a piece of the chicken and I agreed. I might have also stole that carrot off his plate haha. It turns out Hoppin’ John is the type of rice this was served with, which Luke loved.

There were two options for dessert so we decided to get one of each and share.

I went for the Maleficent Dragon – crunchy milk chocolate base and special dark chocolate-blackberry ganache centre with caramel mousse and orange-vanilla sauce

I’m not a huge blackberry fan, but I took my first bite of this and really enjoyed it. I took another bite, this time from more inside, and was really surprised when strong heat hit my mouth.

Apparently, there was cayenne pepper in the chocolate part at the bottom. It wasn’t mentioned in the description, but it’s also a dessert paying homage to a fire-breathing dragon – so it totally makes sense. I was examining it, trying to figure out which part the spiciness was coming from when our waitress walked over, and she looked mortified – she kept asking if everything was ok, and if I had found something in my dessert – I think she was scared I had found a hair or something in it. She laughed once I explained that I just wasn’t expecting the heat. I’m a bit of a wimp with spice, but cayenne pepper just works so well with chocolate that I really enjoyed this.

Luke went for the other dessert option, and ordered the Coconut Cake – layers of toasted coconut, vanilla cake and coconut cream garnished with Mardi-Gras-inspired toasted coconut flakes, caramel and raspberry sauces

Luke told me afterwards that he wasn’t really excited about ordering this, but it ended up being so much better than he thought it would be, and he really liked it. I stole a few bites, and I agreed. You have to like coconut, but if you’re a fan then you will like this. The cake was light and fluffy, the coconut was toasted so it added a nice crunchiness, and the raspberry sauce complimented everything so well. I would consider ordering this again for sure.

Also included with our Fantasmic dining package was a drink (all of Disneyland is alcohol free, and this restaurant is included in that). We both had the Mint Julep – which had changed a bit since our January trip, but was still delicious. I didn’t keep track of how many, but we both had multiple refills of these.

The cost for the Fantasmic dining package was $45 each, plus the $7 for the Pommes Frites. I used my Annual Pass to save 15%, so our total bill came to $88.84 after tax. Everything we ordered is on the regular menu with the exception of the Maleficent dessert, but I figure the reserved section for Fantasmic cost us about $10 total – which is a great deal. The view from our section was fantastic, and we didn’t have to stake out a spot hours in advance. The show is phenomenal there,  and I was so glad we did this dining package. I’m sad that the package was only a limited time thing at Cafe Orleans, but we will be back at this restaurant, possibly to eat the exact same items we had on this trip haha.
