January 6, 2016 – More MK

We had to hurry after leaving Pirates in order to make it to our supper reservation on time. I had somehow managed to find a reservation for Be Our Guest, I was excited! My review can be found here.

After eating, you can stop to meet the Beast in his study on your way out. The Beast noticed my birthday pin, and tried to ask me how old I was, except he kept throwing his hands up in the air and Luke and I thought he was trying to “raise the roof”, so we joined in. He thought we were crazy…

The cast member standing by started laughing, and explained the Beast was trying to ask “how many” while pointing to me birthday pin. We all had a good laugh about that, and then ended up getting these pictures:

By the time we left the restaurant, it was already after 8. We had heard the fireworks going off while we were eating our dessert, so that threw a wrench in my plans to see the MK fireworks that night. Spoiler alert – we actually didn’t end up seeing them at any point during our vacation, so I guess that’ll need to become a priority for when we go back :) At some point while we were at supper, it had rained which cleared the park out a bit. The park was open until 9 that night, but there were extra magic hours until 11pm and we planned on taking advantage of that!

Over the next two hours, we managed to get so many rides in, all with minimal wait times. Of course we went to the Haunted Mansion (which we both LOVE!), Stitch’s Escape (which I thought had so much potential, but fell so flat), Big Thunder Mountain (one of my favourite Disney rides!), Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin (which I lost terribly at). Here’s our picture from that one, we were taking our mission of defeating Emperor Zurg very seriously…

I hate to do it again with comparing the parks, but the Buzz Lightyear ride is so much better at Disneyland! It’s so much easier to shoot accurately when you can lift the gun up.

We finished our night off at the Monster’s Inc Laugh Floor, which I actually enjoyed. It’s super lame humour, but I laughed like an idiot most of the way through. As we were leaving the park for the night, I stopped to snap these pictures:

There was a line of Photopass photographers extending down Main Street away from the castle, so we walked until we saw one with a short line before stopping for a bunch of these pictures:

As we were walking down Main Street, we heard music and actually got to see Tink fly over the castle to signal the park was closed for the night. When we got to our bus stop, we had to wait an agonizing 3 minutes for a bus to show up! Haha, I was so impressed by the Disney transportation service! After ~20-25 minutes, we were back at All Star Music and headed straight to bed (it was midnight by this point…). We needed to get some sleep, I had another busy day planned for us tomorrow (although the day had other plans for us…)

January 6, 2016 – Magic Kingdom

After riding Space Mountain, we decided to head to Fantasyland. Mad Tea Party had a really short lineup, the sign said the queue was 15 minutes but it was actually only about 5 minutes.

As we were exiting the ride, Pooh and Tigger walked past us, so we decided to follow them to their meet and greet area. There were only a few people in line already, and I love those characters so we hopped in line for our first character meet of our trip!

[IMG][IMG]

After meeting Pooh and Tigger, it was time for our third fastpass of the day – Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. It was a cute ride for sure, but way too quick and I can’t imagine waiting in line for over an hour for it. I also realized way too late that I didn’t get my on-ride picture and video :(

Since we had now used up our three pre-selected Fastpasses, we headed to a kiosk to pick out a 4th one. We ended up in line behind people who were completely clueless, and had no idea what they were doing or what they wanted to select. The Cast Member was very patient, but you could tell they were getting a little frustrated too, since the people were looking at their phone, and would say they wanted a fastpass for a ride that wasn’t even in Magic Kingdom. Eventually we made it to the front and selected a 4th fastpass for Pirates of the Caribbean.

We checked wait times on the Disney app, and decided to head to Ariel’s Undersea Adventure. The wait time said 25 minutes, and it was pretty much exact.

The ride itself is basically the exact same as the one at Disney California Adventure, but the exterior is really impressive at WDW. I loved how it looked like you were entering a cave while waiting in the queue line. I also apologize for continuously comparing the rides in Florida and California, but I had been to Disneyland first..

We walked over to the Storybook Circus area to check on the wait for Dumbo – only 15 minutes so into another line we get!

From there, we hopped on the Railroad – with zero wait time. We rode it all the way around to Frontierland. We still had time to kill before our FP+ window opened for POTC, so off to the Enchanted Tiki Room! We didn’t have time to check it out when we were in California (either time as it so happens). We got into line and as we walked through the queue line the doors opened up – perfect timing once again! I have to say – seeing that once is enough. Our FP window was open by the time we left the Tiki Room; in less than 5 minutes we were on a boat off to see some Pirates. Once again, another ride which is way better at Disneyland. The ride ended, and Luke and I just looked at each other and said “that was it?!”. It’s way too short at WDW.

When we checked the time, we realized we needed to hurry to get to our supper reservation – which was of course on the other side of the park…

January 6, 2016 – First Park!

Day Two – Wednesday, January 6, 2016 – Part Two

After dropping off our goodies from the race Expo, it was time to head to our first park of the trip! We headed out to the front of our hotel and had to wait….. one minute until the bus was pulling up. We were killing it at Disney transportation so far!

After a bus ride which took around 25 minutes, we were pulling up to Magic Kingdom! We had picked this to be our park of the day based on our supper reservation, and it just seemed like the perfect one to start with! And the Christmas decorations were still up, which I didn’t think they would be so I was excited about that!

As soon as I entered the park, I stopped to get a birthday pin (my birthday was the following Wednesday, so I figured it was ok to wear one since it was within a week). As soon as we got to Main Street the Move It! Shake It! Dance & Play It! Parade was starting, so of course we stopped to watch our first WDW parade.

While watching the parade I actually got a little choked up, after months of planning and reading trip reports on the disboards, I was finally standing in Magic Kingdom! The parade itself was nothing special, but it was cute and had some great characters. After the parade, we walked down Main Street (where I was again a little choked up at the sight of Cinderella’s castle – it’s so big and beautiful!). We didn’t really have a ton of time to admire it though, we had to get to our first Fastpass selection of our trip! FP+ #1 – Splash Mountain! Once we hopped into the fastpass line, it took about 5 minutes before we were boarding our log. I also prefer the logs here compared to Disneyland – sitting side by side is so much better! It’s so easy to plan ahead for a funny photo on this ride, so here’s our first ride photo of the trip:

By the time we finished our visit with Briar Rabbit and Briar Bear, it was after 1pm and I hadn’t ate since breakfast, but we were both getting hungry. We knew we wanted a quick service option, since all of our table service credits on our dining plan were spoken for with reservations, so we decided on Peco’s Bills! We figured we’d be fine splitting an entree, since we did have a supper reservation for later and we knew we’d have a fairly large meal there. Our review of Peco’s Bills can be found here.

We finished up and went to the Christmas store in Magic Kingdom. I’ve been trying to buy a new ornament on every trip we go on, so eventually I can decorate an entire Christmas tree just with ornaments that remind us of trips we’ve taken together. I decided on this one, I knew I wanted something that had the year on it, and also said Walt Disney World (which this one has on the side).

I was scared of breaking it if I had to carry it around with me all day, so I had it shipped to our hotel for pickup the next day – I love this feature of staying on site!

After this, it was time to head to our second fastpass of the day (and our second ride of the trip!) We basically had to walk from one side of the park to the other, but that was okay, we had lots of time. Luke snapped this picture of me in front of the castle while we were walking to Tomorrowland: (and yes, I had a different Disney outfit to wear every single day we were there haha)

We stopped for our first Photopass pictures of our trip along the way too! We were both really hesitant about buying Photopass before we left, especially with our terrible exchange rate, but my mom decided to give us money towards the cost as part of my birthday present. So, I prepaid the $150US for it – which ended up being $211 Canadian dollars, ugh.

Anyways, I was determined to make it worth it! So here’s a few from our first stop at a photographer:

From there, we headed over to Space Mountain. The Fastpass line was huge, and I was a little worried we might be in for a long wait time, but it ended up moving pretty well, and we were at the front of the line in about 20 minutes. The star effect isn’t nearly as good as it is at Disneyland, and I wasn’t a huge fan of the single file seats. Also, 7 weeks after this, we were at Disneyland again and got to experience the Hyperspace Mountain overlay – and nothing can compare to that. It was phenomenal! I still enjoyed Space Mountain at WDW, but I definitely enjoy this ride more at Disneyland. That being said, here is our on-ride photo (our Space Mountain pics were among my least favourite of the trip sadly):

January 6, 2016 – RunDisney Expo

January 6, 2016 – Part One

We woke up on our first day at Disney around 8am. I know from reading a lot of trip reports that this is “sleeping in”, but I am not a morning person, and we had a late night the night before with our luggage not showing up to our room until after midnight. We got ready and headed to Intermission Food Court at our hotel (All-Star Music) for breakfast. That review is here.

After eating, we stopped to take this picture:

and then we headed outside to catch a bus to the race Expo. It opened at 10am that morning, and we wanted to be there as close to that time as possible. We walked outside the hotel to a coach bus sitting there waiting, so we walked on and were off to the race Expo! This was our first Disney transportation (excluding Magical Express) and our wait time is currently zero minutes – I was so worried we were going to waste so much time waiting for busses…

Before long the bus dropped us off, we had a short walk and then we were seeing this:

I apologize, I didn’t write notes or pay attention to the buildings we went into here. The entire thing was quite overwhelming, and unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. It also started raining shortly after we arrived, so I left my camera in my bookbag to keep it dry, and any pictures I did take here were with my phone (and I didn’t take very many).

Luke went and picked up his race pack in one building, and then we had to go into another building to pick up his race shirt. He also bought himself a Disney marathon weekend tshirt, and we looked around at some of the expo vendors. I loved the Ariel NewBalance shoes, but I couldn’t justify the cost when it’s not the brand of sneaker I wear (I love my Asics). I did end up buying Luke a Disney themed medal display, as it was something I had looked at ordering online, but the shipping cost to Canada was a little ridiculous. So when I saw the exact one I was going to order there, and I could take it home with me that day, I was sold! I don’t have a picture of it, but it’s this one in sparkly black: http://www.heavymedalz.com/Product/10OnceUponBlack.php Now to fill it I guess we’ll just have to plan on more RunDisney events (which are already in our plans…).

We didn’t spend too much time at the Expo, we had FastPasses to get to! We did see what we wanted to, and Luke had more than enough time to look at the official RunDisney merch, so we decided to head back to our hotel to drop off our purchases. But first, I made Luke pose for this picture:

We walked over to the bus pickup spot, and there was a bus sitting there waiting! Two for two today! We went back to All Star Music, dropped off our race Expo purchases and then headed back out to catch our first bus to one of the WDW parks! I might have been a little bit excited at this point…

Day One – Part Two – We’ve Arrived!

January 5, 2016 – Part Two

After snapping a picture of the airport Disney store, we set off to check in with Magical Express. We didn’t have our Magic Bands yet, as they won’t ship them to Canada, but I had my booklet from Disney with all of our confirmation information. It went very smoothly, and we joined the line for the All-Star Resorts. While standing in line, I remembered that I had forgotten to do online check-in, so that’s when I did it. We stood in line for less than 10 minutes before we were directed onto a bus! We ended up sitting on the Magical Express bus for about 15 minutes waiting for more passengers before we started driving to Disney. We used this time to take our first selfie on our Disney trip :)

We were staying at the All-Star Music Resort, so we were the third stop out of four (Coronado Springs guests were also on our bus). We had used the yellow luggage tags and I had checked in online from the airport, so after walking off the bus we were at the counter getting our Magic Bands and room number within 2 minutes. After receiving a map of the hotel with the location of our room, we decided to stop at the Intermission Food Court. We hadn’t ate much all day as I really try to limit myself to what I eat on travel days (I have Crohn’s Disease, so flare-ups on an airplane are not fun for anyone). It was late by this point, so the menu was limited but we didn’t care. We activated our refillable mugs – I chose blue and Luke grabbed a green one for himself. Click here for the review of our meal 🙂

After eating, we set off to find our room. It really surprised us how large All-Star Music was! We were in the 7th building, Broadway themed. We found our room and tested both of our Magic Bands to make sure they worked. No issues there, so we settled in to wait for our luggage to arrive. It ended up being a pretty late night, our bags didn’t arrive in our room until 12:20, but we were asleep within 20 minutes of it arriving.

I also forgot to take pictures of our room when I first got there, and didn’t actually take these pictures until the morning we were checking out…oh well! Here’s our room!

Day One, Part One – Airports

Day 1 – January 5th, 2016 – Travel Day Part One!

The day before we left, we woke up extra early to drop our dogs off at the kennel before going to work for the day. We take them to one that is about a half hour drive away, and they are only open during certain hours, so we knew there wouldn’t be time after work while we were trying to finish packing, and our flight left early the next morning so no time then either. I’m always sad saying goodbye to them, but I was just so excited that I was going to be in Disney by the next day!

On our travel day, our alarm went at 4am. I am NOT a morning person, but that morning I had no problem getting out of bed – we were going to WDW! We had most of our packing complete the night before, so we were on the road by 5, and had a very quick and easy drive to the airport. Traveling can sometimes be a bit of a risk in January, but lucky for us there were no storms in the forecast! We checked our car in at our preferred parking lot by 5:30, and waited less than two minutes before a shuttle bus to the terminal had pulled up. We had decided to splurge and reserve valet parking, so it’s the last stop and the bus was full by the time we got on, so we had to stand. We were the only ones on the bus going to the US Terminal of the airport, so we were the last ones off the bus. Luke had checked us in online, so we used the kiosk to print off our baggage tags, went to the desk to get our boarding passes, and off to customs! Security was really quiet, we were the only people in our line. Once we got to customs there was only one other person using the electronic kiosks, so we walked right up to one. Once it printed off our receipt, we took it up to an extremely friendly customs agent who made a few jokes with me about my hair colour, and then we were through! While we were looking around the duty free store, I remembered that I had forgot my headphones at home, boo! So I had to go to the tech store and spend my first $20 of the trip. Oh well, such is life.

We decided to grab some Quiznos for breakfast – turkey, swiss and ranch on white bread for me and a honey chicken club on whole wheat for Luke. Sorry, no pictures of that meal. By the time we finished eating it was still only 6:30 – our flight didn’t leave until 8. We were expecting security and customs to take a bit longer…but better to be early than risk missing the flight. While we were waiting, Luke went to Starbucks with a gift card we had found on the weekend to get himself a coffee and a Very Berry Hibiscus for me.

Our flight to Minneapolis/St.Paul left on time, even with de-icing. The flight offered free Wi-Fi and had a decent selection of free movies to watch, so we watched the original Jurassic Park (which I had never seen…).

We ended up landing early in Minneapolis, so we had plenty of time to get to our next gate (we were originally worried we might be cutting it close). Our next flight was to Detroit, and it was packed. It left a few minutes late, but made up the time in the air and ended up landing early as well. We had trouble getting the Wi-Fi to work on this plane, so we just played games on Luke’s iPad. I was really impressed by the Delta Terminal at the Detroit airport, I thought it was really nice! I was way too entertained by watching the mini-monorail thing inside the terminal…

Our flight from there to Orlando was close to full, but not 100%. There were actually less children on it then I thought there would be. The flight left on time, and arrived in Orlando on time. We spent our time on that flight getting into the Disney mood by watching Brave (we’re big Pixar fans).

After our quick ride on the fake monorail, we saw our first sign of Disney – the Disney Store in the airport!

Disney California Adventure – Part Two

April 17, 2015

After our ride on Goofy’s Sky School, we went on the Silly Symphony Swings – a classic carnival staple! It’s a simple ride, but it’s one I’ve always loved and this was no exception. dscn9784

Next up was The Little Mermaid – Ariel’s Undersea Adventure. This was another Cole’s Notes version of a ride, which involved sitting in a large oversized sea-shell while it took you through a dark, animatronic-filled re-telling of the story. I’d have to say my favourite part was the two 20-something guys in the shell ahead of us who were belting out “Under the Sea” at the top of their lungs.

At this point in the day, we decided to make our way over to Cars Land as it was getting close to our fastpass time for Radiator Springs Racers.

We decided to go on Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree first, which I thought was really cute. You sit in a little trailer being pulled by a tractor (like the ones that Mater takes Lightning McQueen to tip over in the middle of the night) and it moves around like a square dance while Mater sings.

There’s  a photo opportunity just outside this ride, which is pretty adorable, and had no line.

I loved the attention to detail in Cars Land! We didn’t get a chance to on this trip, but I’d love to eat at Flo’s some day when we go back, it looked so cute!

We passed the statue for Stanley on our way to use our fast-passes, and of course I had to take a picture.

It was then time to ride the Radiator Springs Racers – the darling of rides at the California Adventure Park. We were there during a fairly slow time of year, and were walking on to most rides, and this one had a posted wait time of 75 minutes. Thank goodness for fastpasses! We ended up waiting about 10 minutes even with our passes, but it was so worth it! What an amazing ride! The animatronics were great, the scenery was fantastic – this was impressive. After getting off, Luke and I were talking about how much that ride must have cost to build – “That must have cost Disney like $20 million to make!”. Turns out we have no idea how much building a ride costs – according to google that ride actually cost $200 million to make – we were only off by a bit haha.

We decided we were getting thirsty, and could use a drink. I also knew I wanted to buy at least one souvenir mug, and I had seen a few people with the ones from the Cozy Cone Motel over the course of the day and I knew it had to be that one.

So, I bought the 16oz souvenir cone mug filled with root beer for $8.99 and Luke got the 24oz cone filled with coke for $11.99. It was pretty difficult for us to admit we had just spend $20US on two non-alcoholic drinks, but look at how stinking adorable these mugs are! After finishing them, we washed them out in the bathroom so they wouldn’t be sticky, and we did bring them back to Canada with us 🙂 We have used them a few times since buying them.

After leaving Cars Land we walked around the wharf again.

dscn9798

We stopped to watch a performance by the green men from Toy Story!

We walked through the bakery (where we got to taste some delicious sourdough bread) and then we headed towards Toy Story Mania. It had long lines all day, but we decided to just suck it up and wait, and we’d have good luck with lineups up to that point. The posted wait time said 30 minutes, I think it ended up being closer to 40 or 45 though. It was fun! I don’t like waiting that long for rides, but I’m glad we did. Of course, Luke beat me, but just barely.

We then walked back over to Hollywood Land, where Luke enjoyed the name of this hot dog quick-serve location.

We wanted to check out Turtle Talk with Crush, but we had no idea what it was. We finally got into the theatre, and it was really cute, but not something we’d do again. It is great for kids though, they were all loving it. We actually cut out a little early as we wanted to watch the Pixar Parade. We ended up with a great spot to watch the parade. As I’ve mentioned before, Luke and I love Pixar movies so we thought this parade was fantastic! My pictures ended up mixed up, so they are probably not in the correct order of the parade, but you’ll get the idea.

Ooohhhh! The chosen ones!

After the parade, we still had a bit of time before our dining reservation so headed to the Mickey Ferris Wheel. We decided to hop in the stationary gondola line, as it had a posted wait time of 10 minutes, but the swinging one had a wait time of 35 minutes. I guess the swinging one is a little too intense for a lot of people, because we watched while they washed the vomit out of 2 different swinging gondolas. This made our wait time to be pushed closer to 20 minutes, so I was starting to worry that we would be late for our reservation. Turns out it was fine, we had to wait about 10 minutes for a table to be cleared off for us once we arrived at Wine Country Trattoria.

Our night ended with World of Colour – a water, music and lights show that lasts almost half an hour over the water in Paradise Pier. It was unbelievable, and well worth the dining reservation for our front-row centre viewpoint. The following pictures are of the pier lit up while we were waiting for the show to start. I didn’t actually take any pictures of the show itself, I was so caught up in the beauty of it.

Overall, I think we did a good job of covering the park – we were able to cover almost every attraction in the park, minus only a few – Soarin’ was closed for refurbishment, and we didn’t go on King Triton’s Carousel or California Screamin’ Roller Coaster (we had even grabbed fastpasses for this, but I couldn’t work up the courage to get on it after watching it – I’ve never been on a roller coaster that goes upside down. I know, I’m a wimp. Maybe one day…

Disney California Adventure Park – Part One

April 17, 2015

We did very little research on Disney before going to California for the first time, it was not a destination at the top of our list. Luckily we went during a slower time of the year; in April after all spring breaks and Easter breaks were over, but before school let out for the summer. We knew we had Friday and Sunday free to check out Disney parks on the weekend we went, so we bought a 2-day pass (no parkhopper, we figured one park per day would be fine for our first trip).  Here’s the link to the post about our overall trip 🙂

Friday we decided to check out California Adventure.

dscn9695

Most Disney people will swear you have be there at rope drop. I am not a morning person, especially when I’m on vacation, so that didn’t happen. I think we arrived at the gate around 10:30 – our hotel was only about a 15 minute walk from the entrance. As soon as we entered the park, we stopped for a quick photo with Pluto – my first Disney character meet and greet!

After meeting a giant dog, we went and grabbed Fastpasses for Radiator Springs Racers, as instructed by one of my co-workers in the two days we had to plan this trip. This kiosk is located close to A Bug’s Life Land, so we decided to start our day there.

I had only ever watched A Bug’s Life once, and it was years ago, so I didn’t remember anything about it. (I know, I’m the worst Disney person ever – but don’t worry, I watched it shortly after getting home). But the decor was not lost on me, I thought it was pretty awesome!

dscn9700

dscn9727

dscn9726

The first ride we went on was Flik’s Flyers, because the lineup looked super short. We only ended up waiting maybe 5 minutes before getting on the ride. Luke was really hoping for the Chinese Food box, but we ended up sitting in the Raisin box. This was a very tame ride, the perfect way to start the day 🙂

From there we headed over to Francis’ Ladybug Boogie, where you sit in a ladybug that spins around (the speed depends on how fast you spin the wheel in the centre, very much like the teacups at Disneyland). We had another wait that was less than 5 minutes.

Next up – Tuck and Roll’s Drive ‘Em Buggies. Again, another ride we basically walked on to. This is essentially just bumper cars, but all the cars are designed to look like Tuck and Roll, the Hungarian pillbugs. There are little speakers inside each car that sound like them too! My car worked great, but Luke’s did not unfortunately.

Heimlich’s Chew Chew Train was next. This is a children’s slow-moving train ride narrated by everyone’s favourite caterpillar as he tells you about his favourite food. It was cute, and we didn’t even care that we were the only ones on the ride without kids. We also walked straight onto this ride with no wait. And of course there was giant candy corn!

dscn9757

Before we went I had told Luke I was not going on the Tower of Terror, I was not a fan of free-falling rides. We walked over to see the building anyways, and saw that there was only a 15 minute wait. Luke really wanted to do it, so I reluctantly agreed. Turns out I loved it! Worth noting – we did not buy any of our on-ride photos on this trip, so any you see are pictures I took with my phone haha.

dscn9759

At this point, we had already been on 5 rides – and had only been in the park for about an hour. We were doing so well!

After leaving Tower of Terror, we walked around the Hollywood Land area, where we saw these guys performing while driving around in this old car.

We then headed towards Monsters Inc – Mike & Sully to the Rescue. I don’t have any pictures of the ride itself, but it’s a slow-moving ride that Luke liked to describe as a Cole’s Notes version of the movie. Cute, nothing like the previous ride we had been on (TOT) but it was worth seeing for us – we both love Pixar movies. It also had a fairly short line, we waited under 10 minutes for it.

Next on our list was to head to the Grizzly Peak area to ride Grizzly River Run. It was a really fantastic water ride, but I had my camera and phone tucked safely into a plastic baggie, hence no pictures. This was one of our longest waits of the day, I think we had to wait close to half an hour before getting on this ride. Sadly Soarin’ was closed for refurbishment, so we didn’t get to go on that (we’re pretty much destined to never get on that ride…)

At this point we started heading towards the Paradise Pier area – how freaking beautiful is this place?! We were also starting to feel a little hungry so Luke grabbed a turkey leg (review here).

I knew I had no interest in a turkey leg, so I found the Paradise Garden Grill (review HERE).

After our snack, we decided to go on the Golden Zephyr – which is just a spaceship looking thing that spins you around – almost old-school carnival-like. It doesn’t spin too fast, and would be safe for almost everyone. It’s kind of boring, and I don’t feel the need to go on this every trip.

dscn9782

dscn9783

We noticed a short line for Goofy’s Sky School Roller Coaster, so we jumped into that line. In less than 10 minutes, we were twisting and turning with Goofy! This ride was ok, it’s essentially a crazy mouse style roller coaster with some sharp turns.

Anaheim, California – April 16-20, 2015

Luke was born and raised in Winnipeg, so he has always been a Jets fan. In 2015 when they made the playoffs (for the first time in 19 years) he was so excited – he started looking at ticket prices, but of course StubHub prices for the games in Winnipeg were ridiculous – like I’m talking $500+ per ticket per game. He jokingly sent me a text saying we should go to California to watch the two games being played in Anaheim, as tickets could be had for a fraction of the cost. I immediately went to talk to a co-worker, who is a travel agent on the side and after her initial shock at my request, got back to me quickly with prices. Despite the fact we had only been living in our new house for 6 weeks, we felt the cost of the flights and hotel was something we could afford, so we went ahead and booked it (after Luke and I talked to our bosses and got approval to take short-notice vacation). That happened on a Monday afternoon. Thursday morning we woke up, drove to the airport bright and early and flew to the John Wayne airport in Santa Ana, California.

We knew we wanted to avoid LAX, so John Wayne was a much smaller and closer option (and only cost us about $30 more than flying into LAX – the hour we saved getting from the airport to our hotel is worth way more than that!). I booked transportation from the airport to our hotel with SuperShuttle – it was cheap and easy. The ride to our hotel was quick too!

I figured if I was taking the time to fly all the way to California to cheer on the Jets, I could spend the $140 and buy a jersey for myself before I went. Luke of course already owned his.

Whenever we travel, we tend to always book fairly cheap hotels, we typically don’t spend much time in our room anyways. For this trip, we stayed at the Super 8 on Katella Ave, which wasn’t the fanciest, but it did the trick. Plus, they had availability on our short-notice schedule!

Thursday after arriving at our hotel and checking in, we left our luggage with the front desk since our room was not yet ready, and went for a walk. We were right beside the Anaheim Gardenwalk so we stopped at the Cheesecake Factory for lunch.

That night we went to game 1 of the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs between the Anaheim Ducks and the Winnipeg Jets. It was a great game, but unfortunately the Jets lost 🙁 Our seats were in the nosebleeds, but we were still in the arena for an NHL playoff game – check that off my bucket list!

Friday we spent the entire day at Disney’s California Adventure Park (I’ll link to the report for that day once I have it up).

Saturday we did some shopping at the Outlets at Orange, ate lunch at In N’ Out burger (I don’t understand the hype about that place at all, it was just ok) and then went back to the Honda Centre to watch game 2 of the series. In the few days we had between booking the trip and actually flying to California, I had done a bit of research and managed to get us a reservation at the Standing O’ restaurant located inside the arena prior to the game.

The game was another great one, but it also ended in another heartbreaking loss for the Jets.

Sunday we spent the day at Disneyland (again, the trip report link will be posted once I have it up).

Monday morning we woke up and had a bit of time before we needed to catch the SuperShuttle, so we walked back over to the Gardenwalk and went to Bubba Gump’s for lunch.

After eating, it was time to head back to the airport and head home. We both had to be back to work on Tuesday morning.

It was a very quick trip, but so worth it (despite the Jets losing both games). We both really loved the city of Anaheim, and we fell in love with Disney while we were there – we came home and almost immediately booked a trip to Orlando to visit Walt Disney World. Plus, hockey tickets are so cheap in Anaheim! It’s too bad the Angels were on the road, I would have loved to have caught a baseball game while we were there as well! Oh well, save that for another trip (perhaps plan it when the Blue Jays are visiting the Angels?)
